Details of Joseph Nodder marryiage to Emily Williams Q3 1870 Plymouth

I know from FreeBMD that Joseph Nodder (b 1851) married Emily Williams (b cir 1849) sometime in Q3 1870 in Plymouth Reg'n District. I'd love to know more about the marriage - church, date, fathers names etc. I know a lot about Joseph, but would like to find out more about Emily. At present I only know she was born ~1849, Blackheath, London. I have hunted for details in Family Search Catalog, Ancestry, etc, with no joy. Hence this request.

• Joseph's father was named Joseph Elias Nodder, a shoemaker from Blackheath, who emigrated to Canada with wife Elizabeth in 1873).
• In 1871 Census Joseph and Emily were found in Frances Street, St Andrews, Plymouth with Carr family.
• In 1881 they have emigrated to Canada, (Whitby, Ontario, today a suburb of Toronto)
• Joseph's family has a history of Wesleyan Methodism.
• In 1881 Canada Census (also 1891) Joseph and Emily give their religion as 'Brethren'

I find the Plymouth Brethren 'sect' very interesting (e.g. I read they could only marry on Tuesdays!) and membership would clearly have a big impact on the couple's lives.

Unless the marriage cert is online you would have to buy a copy.  Nothing on Ancestry

From your original findings, I would say that your only option would be to purchase a copy of the marriage certificate from GRO.  There are very few non-conformist records on-line compared to C of E.

Did they have any children before they emigrated?  Just to double check her maiden name.

Not found on Find my past. Seems like the only way forward is to purchase the marriage certificate.

The only Nodder/Williams birth was 1873 - Sheffield.  George Laysell Nodder who died as a baby

No children on the 1881 Canadian census.

Thanks all for this. I shall see if I can buy the marriage certificate and go from there. I should have thought of that at the start.

Can someone advise where/how to order marriage certificates. I know the GRO website where you can search for and order birth and death records, but not marriage records.

Marriage certs can be ordered in exactly the same way as birth & deaths but you cannot buy PDF copies - you have to pay the full £11
