Lamornock - place or ...?
« on: Tuesday 17 January 23 16:26 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I've come across a reference in a 1666 Testament Dative to the testator being "in Lamornock".  I haven't been able to locate a place of this name and wonder if it is a house name or some other thing.  The testator was of the parish of Kilbarchan.  Any assistance is greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

Hi Fiddlerslass

Thank you for that link.  It is highly possible as the 'w' is silent so the pronunciation makes both spellings sound the same.  Additionally, in 1666 the finer points of spelling were not yet determined.  Also, now with the benefit of seeing the 1846 Ordnance Survey map and seeing the same 'Lawmornock' courtesy of Forfarian, below, I can rest a little easier that that farm was likely not a new development back then.  Thank you, again, for your assistance.  It is greatly appreciated.

Hi Forfarian,

Thank you for those links.  I visited both of them and even found the image of a portion of the farm on Geograph.  Although it is not of period buildings it is interesting to see the land around it.  I really appreciate the link to the 1846 Ordnance Survey, it has helped me hypothesize that "Larmornock" and "Lamornock" are highly possibly one and the same place.  Thank you, again, for your assistance.  It is greatly appreciated.

I don't think there can be much doubt - there wouldn't be two different places, one with a 'w' and one without, in the same parish, and spelling was very variable in those days so a missing 'w' isn't significant.

Living in the wider area, I would say there is no doubt as the farm was the first thing I thought of seeing your post title and before reading your post
Tannahill:  Ayrshire, Renfrewshire
Mulgrew/Milgrew:  Glasgow
Canning: Renfrewshire

Hi, carolineasb,

Thank you for taking the time to respond to my post.  I appreciate it greatly and having local knowledge really helps.  I'm in Canada so have absolutely no local knowledge.

Have a great day!
