James Spencer born 1817 Hallam, Sheffield
« on: Tuesday 17 January 23 17:07 GMT (UK) »
Trying to find a baptism record for him. If I track his ages on census from 1841 to 91 he was born between April 1817 and march 1818. This concurs with his Find A grave record of being 74 on his death 12 Feb 1892. He married Charlotte Bettany at Beauchief near Sheffield 18 Feb 1839, his father was John Spencer. This at the time was in the county of Derbyshire but there are no baptism records that match when Derbyshire is included in the search.

His birth place on census is either Fulwood, Upper Hallam or Hallam, so all South Sheffield.

Any help appreciated

Apologies - but where have you found the marriage between James Spencer and Charlotte Bettany in 1839, or any other year.

Using FreeBMD I can find no marriage between James Spencer and a surname of Bettany.   Nor marriage between James Spencer and Charlotte ? ..... both searches in 1839.

BUT there might be a marriage between James SPENSER and Charlotte BETTANEY  :o

Yes - as BumbeB says, it's James Spenser and Charlotte Bettaney in Eccleshall Bierlow Reg District on the Civil Registration Index.

Haven't found his baptism record though. Does his marriage cert have any 'Spenser' witnesses please, who might be a brother?

Did you notice that on the marriage entry Charlotte Bettaney's father is shown as Joseph BINNEY and that her age is shown as "near 21"?   :)

Yes I saw that. I think I’ve seen Bettaney spelt at least 5 different ways. Makes for fun research. Thanks for your efforts all. I’ve looked 3 years for this baptism of my 3rd Great Grandfather and it seems it’s buried somewhere deep.
