"Eliza’s siblings were born Workington, Cumberland".
Can you identify the siblings please.....names....birthplace....birth date

"John is a widow on the 1871 census."
Can you identify the Census record you are seeing.....address...names.....ages...birthplaces.

Attached is the 1871 census that I think is her family.    The only sibiling I've found a death for is William Thompson:
Death - 16 Dec 1901 • Croydon District Hospital, Croydon, Queensland, Australia
Suicide with a Razor. Occupation: Miner. Age: 56yrs. Parents: John Thompson (a Driver) & Maria Duff. Born: Penrith, Cumberland. 12yrs in QLD.

Using Ancestry Census images, this is what I see -

England 1851 at New Works Cleator Cumberland
BURNS Thomas       37y                    b. Newry Ireland   Overlocker in flax mill
BURNS Mary           22y                    b. Drum****   Ireland
BURNS Margaret       2y                    b. Cleator Cumberland

GRO birth
BURNS Margaret      mms.   DUFFEY
MarQ 1848              Wirral Union        Vol 19    pg 303

BURNS William        mms. DUFFY
SepQ 1850              Wirral Union       Vol  19   pg 347

England 1861    at (S?)oapery  Workington Cumberland
THOMPSON John         38y   cartman             b. Ireland
THOMPSON Maria        33y                            b. Ireland
BERNE Margaret          12y  stepdaughter       b. Workington  Cumberland
THOMPSON Maria        10y   dau                    b. Workington  Cumberland
THOMPSON William H    8y   dau                    b. Workington  Cumberland
THOMPSON Jane           6y   dau                    b. Workington  Cumberland
THOMPSON Eliza           4y   dau                    b. Workington  Cumberland
THOMPSON James         8m dau                    b. Workington  Cumberland

At 1871 Census Eliza THOMPSON has birthplace, Scotland, and this birth can be found on Scotlandspeople.

I think that Maria DUFF has children with Thomas BURNS, and later with John THOMPSON, being recorded marriages or otherwise.

Interesting!  That sheds some light on the Margaret Bernes step-daughter on the census that I’ve not been able to figure out.
I had thought the names Duff & Duffey weren’t interchangeable at this time.
When you say recorded marriages or otherwise, are you suggesting that Maria Duff and John Thomson may not have married?
Thankyou for your help.

I took the chance and purchased William THOMPSON's death cert. I'm not sure if it's the same parents as Eliza's even though they have same names.  Death cert says he was born in Penrith, Cumberland.

Attached is the 1871 census that I think is her family.    The only sibiling I've found a death for is William Thompson:

Suicide with a Razor. Occupation: Miner. Age: 56yrs. Parents: John Thompson (a Driver) & Maria Duff. Born: Penrith, Cumberland. 12yrs in QLD.

Just to clarify.
You now do think the two people, Eliza and William (whose newspaper notice death was noted by wivenhoe) and who both died in QLD, are siblings.  Correct?

There is this possible marriage.
It is by no means a certainty.
Simply 2 names on the same index page

Marriages Mar 1851

DUFFY Maria
THOMPSON John
Manchester
20/673

This will likely be the marriage of William THOMPSON to Elizabeth HARRISON in Middleborough as stated on his Death Certificate.

Marriages Jun 1889
HARRISON Elizabeth
THOMPSON William Henry
Middlesbro'
9d/882

Sue

ADDING.
Here is a likely birth for Ethel Maud, the daughter.

Birth Dec 1888
Thompson    Ethel Maud
Middlesbro'
9d   546

Not so sure about that now ??? ::)
