WARD, McKay, Queensland
« on: Saturday 21 January 23 16:58 GMT (UK) »
I’m looking for the whereabouts of Walter Ward, born 1867, Kent, England. He landed in McKay, May 28, 1888, with his brother Barling, on board the Quetta, via an assisted emigration scheme.

Barling returned to England, but no trace of Walter.

Any suggestions? I’m unfamiliar with what’s available to search in Australia - I’m in Canada.

Thanks, Linda

You can search for BMD in Queensland here.
https://www.familyhistory.bdm.qld.gov.au/
As the the name is quite common, knowing his parents name is essential.

If he moved to another state you need to look at the index in that state.

You can search the newspapers for him here.
https://trove.nla.gov.au/search/advanced/category/newspapers

There is a record of a Mr Walter Ward born abt 1869  travelling from Victoria to NSW in 1911.
No way of knowing if it is your man, as the name is too common. Without parents names any search for death records is futile.
Milligan - Jardine – Glencross – Dinwoodie - Brown: (Dumfriesshire & Kirkcudbrightshire)
Clark – Faulds – Cuthbertson – Bryson – Wilson: (Ayrshire & Renfrewshire)
Neale – Cater – Kinder - Harrison: (Warwickshire & Queensland)
Roberts - Spry: (Cornwall, Middlesex & Queensland)
Munster: (Schleswig-Holstein & Queensland) and Plate: (Braunschweig, Neubruck & Queensland & New York)

Thank you so much for this. His parents were John Ward and Lucy Wilson.
I searched without any luck. He was definitely just Walter, no second name.

I did find his other brother Arthur, who had come to Australia earlier😁

Where did you find the Walter going to NSW?

I wonder if Neale meant this record - this Walter WARD actually embarked in Antwerp.

Sorry if you meant a different record Neale   :)

There are a number of articles about their brother Arthur if you haven't seen them, no mention of his brothers though.  Here are a couple including a photo...

Sorry for the mis-spelling!  Those articles are wonderful- what tough individuals they must have been!  Even blurry, I can see the family resemblance in Arthur. He has a lot of descendants living in Australia today.

Another brother, John, emigrated to Fremantle in 1886 - again, no idea what happened to him.

Ann Frances Ward, sister to these boys, was my great grandmother.

Thanks again, Linda

Having said all that below I believe I may have found a death for JOHN in Claremont, near Perth. Right age at death, right fathers name, mothers name Bessie, instead of Lucy?

I have yet to figure out exactly what certificate I need, as there seems to be a lot of options?!

I haven't ordered a WA certificate, but generally I would say that you don't need a certified copy (or a commemorative copy). It looks like you can order online here:
https://online-rbdm.justice.wa.gov.au/

I assume you would be getting the "Reduced fee certificates (75 years or older)   $36.00 AUD"
