ABBOTT and COLEMAN and MONTEITH in Witham
« on: Wednesday 07 September 05 12:59 BST (UK) »
I am looking for the marriage of Henry Abbott/Abbit and Mary Coleman in Witham in late 1773.

Their son Thomas Abbit (b 1777, Witham) married Esther Monteith (b 1798, Witham) before 1837.

I can trace no Monteiths in Witham in the census records from 1851 onwards, although I know of two female Monteiths - Mary & Hannah Maria - born there in 1808 and 1831 respectively.

Any information re: Henry, Thomas or Esther gratefully received!

Aha!

Very many thanks - just what I needed. It throws some light on the Monteith connection, as well as confirming Thomas and Esther.

Thanks, CP - I have all of her now, up to and including 1891.  :)

Your 1841 find was the earliest link in the onward chain, and perhaps the most important, because it shows her as quite likely to be the daughter of Esther Monteith. Which means she's either illegit. or the daughter of the marriage of Esther ??? to ??? Monteith before Esther's marriage to Thomas Abbott/Abbit sometime between 1834 and 1837.

But that still all begs the question as to why I have 3 Monteiths (Esther, Hannah Maria and Mary Robinson nee Monteith) born in Witham between 1798 and 1830, and yet there is no family presence there in any of the census returns.  :(

I have now established that Esther Monteith, who married Thomas Abbott in 1833, was a widow. (How and where she married a Monteith is now irrelevant as the Monteiths are not direct line).

Her maiden name was Emmens, and she was born approx 1798 according to various census records. However, I cannot trace her birth nor her parentage. The IGI has virtually no records for Witham - just a single births record from Newland St Independent.

Thomas Abbott's father was Henry Abbott, who married Mary Coleman in Dec 1773 at Witham St. Nicholas, with Martha Emmens as a witness. The trail dies at this point.

Is anyone else researching any of these families, and might be able to help with:

1.  Esther Emmens' birth and parentage
2.  Mary Coleman's birth and parentage
3.  Henry Abbott's birth and parentage

Thanks, cep -

I've also looked at 1851, which brings more Abbots into Mill Lane/Street/Field, and into the fell-mongering business.

With so little information available on-line for Witham, I have been trying to "build" the families from the 41 and 51 censuses, to see if there is a route backward along another line.  So far, although there are some circumstantial links, I have had no luck.

I've also been hoping that some of them were born or married outside Witham, where there might be more records available for the period, but no obvious clusters of the key surnames exist in parishes nearby.

I think I will give up on this one for the time being, and move to another line. But thanks for all your help.
