Alice Maud Mary Dyte, born in Bridgewater, somerset
« on: Monday 23 January 23 11:15 GMT (UK) »
Looking for any info on my great-grandmother, Alice Maud Mary Dyte, (often misprinted as dyke or dyle), and her family. I'll try to make this as least confusing as possible

April/May 1882- Alices parents John William Cridland Dyte & Emma Jane Slocombe marry
13th March 1883-Alice is born in Bridgewater, somerset, England
1885-Emma J Dyte(junior) is born(unconfirmed if this is half or full sister, I suspect full)
1887-Emma Jane Slocombe dies
30 May 1887- John Dyte marries Florence/flora parker
1889-John Dyte(junior) is born
1890- Albert Dyte is born - Assuming john and Albert are half-siblings of Alice.
1901-possibly worked as a housemaid in Tiverton, Devon, according to an England census- name and birthplace match but her age is listed as 16, she would've been 18 in 1901.
1902-1905-no info from this time period
6 Jan 1906- Alice Maud marries Henry James Merrick in Bristol
May 1912-Alice comes to Australia and appears to have left henry later this year

Published in 'The Argus' newspaper(found on trove)on 12 Nov 1924...
" Henry James Merrick, aged 44 years, of Dow Street, Port Melbourne, a seaman from Alice Maud
Merrick, aged 42 years, of Warrandyte, on the ground of desertion. The marriage was celebrated on January 6, 1906, in Bristol, England. There are no children. Petitioner, in his affidavit, said that he came to Melbourne in 1911, as a seaman
on the steamer Argyllshire. He remained there and sent for his wife. She arrived in Australia in May 1912. She later left him."

1919(unconfirmed date)- Alice marries George Edward Guppy/Ledger(my great grandfather)
7 Feb 1921- Ronald George Edward Guppy/Ledger(my grandpa) is born in Warburton, Victoria Australia
26 Oct 1929-Alice dies in her home from a coronary thrombosis, if I remember correctly I believe my 8-year-old grandpa was the one to find her.
She's buried at box hill cemetery.
andddd that's basically what I know...a lot of info is unconfirmed and some may be incorrect.

Welcome to Rootschat Ella  :D

Although you have provided information, you don't make it clear what sort of information you require.  Below is the GRO record of Alice's birth:-

DYTE, ALICE  MAUD MARY    SLOCOMBE
GRO Reference: 1883  J Quarter in BRIDGWATER  Volume 05C  Page 372

I'll see if Alice is on the 1911 census with her husband.

Yes on the 1911 as Mary with hubby Henry.  Assuming I have the correct ones.

Living at 91 Pennywell Road Bristol, Bristol, Gloucestershire - Henry born 1881 in Bristol, Mary born 1883 in Bridgwater.  Included are Bert Dyte born 1891 and Florence Dyte born 1894.

One assumes that Henry left after the 1911 census.  Not clear from the passenger list on Find My Past.

Hhmm, just found a record of an H J Merrick born 1880 in Bristol.  Travelled on the Port Kingston in 1906 as an Able Seaman. The record set is England & Wales Merchant Navy Crew Lists 1861-1913.

Can't say for sure if this is Henry as only the initials are given and it doesn't say where he is going.

Probably not as the original of the 1911 census shows that it was, presumably, filled in by Henry James Merrick as it is signed in that name and his occupation is given as Dock Labourer.  No way of knowing for sure if it was Henry doing the writing or his wife.

So when Henry arrived in Australia is somewhat unclear.  You may be able to find out via other records.
