Thomas John Volan
« on: Tuesday 24 January 23 15:52 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find more about Thomas John Volan who married Ellen Bridgman in 1875 at Pancras, he and Ellen are shown on the 1881 census at St. Pancras Thomas gives his birthplace as Leeds are their ages are shown as 37/34
In 1891 Thomas is again stating his birthplace was Leeds, but their ages are now shown as 58/42
I  can't find Thomas anywhere before his marriage, nor can I find him after the 1891 census.
Ellen died in 1909
I think it likely Thomas's surname had different spellings i e There are two Thomas Fallon's born at Leeds in 1844, mothers maiden names shown as Glinn and O'Brien, but I can't see marriages
I suppose it's possible the family came to England from Ireland due to the potato famine
I haven't as yet sent for the marriage certificate which hopefully would show Thomas's fathers Christian name, is there anywhere online I can get that information from.
Any advise/ ideas would be most welcome

The family is on the 1901 census , transcribed as Nolan. I haven't found their marriage register entry but there is a notice of the marriage in the Witney Express and Oxfordshire and Midland Counties Herald 21 Oct 1875 :

October 13th at the Wesleyan Chapel Lady Margaret Road Kentish Town, Mr Thomas John Volan of Brighton to Ellen , third daughter of Mr William A Bridgeman , late of Witney.

No family details given for Thomas - I think you may have to bite the bullet and buy the certificate, unless someone else can find it.

Thank you so much Christine.

I see the 1901 entry now and it is them - Thomas is a tramcar driver.

Strange that Ellen's family are mentioned and not Thomas's.

I have spent so much on certificates I was hoping to not to have to get another, but i think you're right.
Thank you again

Hi
There are several family trees at Ancestry with Thomas Volan, one including a photo of him and his son.
Worth checking for any further clues I would think

Whilst not answering your original post, are you interested in the outcome of Thomas John & Ellen's children, particularly Ethel Blanche Volan

Believe Thomas John Volan can be found on 1911 census as Johnson Volan aged 78 born Sherburn Yorkshire. This dob ties in with his age in 1891 census. He is also with his daughter Ethel Hicks but she is another A4 page story.

John

There are 2 baptisms in Sherburn near Leeds

Mary Volans 30.1.1835
Jane Volans 20.9.1837

Parents for both William & Mary.

Info only about Ethel Blanche Volan

Last child with Arthur Clayton
CLAYTON, ETHEL  LORNA     mmn NOLAN

1911
Arthur Hicks 35
Ethel Hicks 33
Queenie M  Hicks 11months
Johnson Volan 78 (suspect he is Thomas John Volan as per original post, he is aged 58 on the 1891 census so this ties in nicely)

Birth of Queenie May
CLAYTON, QUEENIE  MAY     mmn VOLAN
GRO Reference: 1910  J Quarter in ISLINGTON  Volume 01B  Page 237

1921
Ethel B Clayton c1877
Myrtle Clayton daughter 1913 b Islington

MOORE, KENNETH  JASON     mmn CLAYTON

So it looks as though Ethel never married Arthur Hicks or a Mr Moore but she does from 1921/2 onwards use the Moore surname, as do her daughters Queenie May & Myrtle Marjorie.
