See linked map view below. The unnamed road leading southwest out of the village to a ford over the River Colne, the present-day Queen Street, looks to be a good candidate. Note that the road to the north running due east to the river is named as Nunnery Street on the old map, thus ruling it out.

1841 Census

The addresses either side of River Green are -
" ..., Rushly Green, Gt Lodge, Laurence, _______ ?**, River Lane (13 households), St. James' St, Back Lane, Church Ponds ..."

The addresses either side of Nunnery Street are -
" ..., Yedham Road, Crouch Green, Nunnery Farm, Nunnery Street, Pie Corner, Bailiff Street ..."

1876 map  https://maps.nls.uk/view/102341825

Shows "Nunnery Farm, Nunnery Street, Pie Corner, Bailiff/Bayley? St"

Shows "Rushley Green, Lawrence Farm (Laurence?), Back Lane and St James' St"

** - yet to make out address

Note - the address I couldn't make out is "Paradise"

I did wonder if River Lane was the road that ran south, marked "Queen Street" on the 1876 map, past Sheepcot Farm.
There is no Queen Street on the '41 Census but it appears on the '51 Census. On the '41 Census there is a "William Basham, carrier" at River Lane and in '51 at Queen Street is a "William Basham, carrier and shoemaker". Of the 13 households in '41 his is the only one I can link with Queen Street in '51.

The '76 map shows Kennal Malting in that area and there are maltsters in River Lane '41.

Thank you, my hubbies 3x grt. grandparents had property  there, sadly both passed  in 1830's so not a help. Of their children one surving son did live in St.James street in 1841.
Many thanks again.
