William Jefferson

Hi,

I am trying to confirm if the William Jefferson who died 23/06/1961, address 4, Bay View Terrace, Laxey, Isle of Man, is my relation. I can't trace an age so unsure. He was born on 21/10/1895 in Elton, Lancashire. He married Christiana Nuttall in 1917 and the couple went on to have a daughter, Marjorie, in 1920. Christina died in 1924 and I think William married Alice McNeil in 1925 in Manchester. I can see from the probate records that the William Jefferson who died in 1961 left his assets to his widow, Alice, and wondered if this could be my relation.   Any advice or information gratefully received.

You could download a copy of his will for £1.50 & see if it mentions his daughter Marjorie which will give you definite proof it’s him

Only wills from England & Wales are recorded on that website.
A will from the Isle of Man will only be included if it was "sealed" in England/Wales (i.e. there were assets based in England/Wales).

Manx wills can be looked up, in person, at the Deeds & Probate Registry, which is a part of the General Registry.

The probate entry shows who the executor(s) were; it does not show who the beneficiaries were. You need the actual will for that.

The good news is that probate was granted in Bangor.
So you will be able to order a copy of the will.
Probate was in 1962.

Jefferson William of 4 Bay View Terrace Laxey Isle of Man died 23 June 1961 Probate Bangor 26 February (1962) to Alice Jefferson widow. Effect £404 12s.

Lonan is the name of the parish and the civil district.
Laxey lies within the Lonan district.
