Ok thank you!
Generally speaking, if John was the son of Mary Ann or Elizabeth Morley, would he have kept their maiden name as his surname if he was born out of wedlock?

Hi
Yes generally he would have kept their surname.Occasionly he might have taken a step father's surname if his mother married but usually he would have his mother's surname.

His birth registration looks to be
John Morley June qtr Wolstanton volume 6b page 170

You can obtain the birth certificate and that would give his parents or parent.

Looking at Robert's children

Mary Ann born 1852 Burselm with parents on 1861 and 1871 censuses
Elizabeth born 1858 with her father or mother 1861,71,91 ,then married August 6th 1898 Oldham St John to James Needham widower 42 labourer. It looks like she was buried at Gorton Cemetery May 1911.
Robert born and died June qtr 1860
William born 1862 married Burslem st John 17.10.1881 Elizabeth Margaret Wardles with whom he was lodging in 1881.He died possibly Dec qtr 1923  in Stoke on Trent

Betsey Morley  born 1874 ,should be Ford as born before their marriage and is probably Sarah's child from her first marriage.I haven't got the full details of her marriage to Robert on 1876 so I don't know her mother's maiden name. She is alive and with her mother on the 1891 census at 2 America St Stoke on Trent.

If I had to plumb for one of the daughters I'd go for Elizabeth born 1858 as she remains with John in the same household in 1891 .

Getting his birth certificate would help.
Good luck with your research .

As Carole has observed, John Morley died in Warwickshire and his address at the time is shown in the Probate index entry for his Estate. £1.50 to obtain a copy of his Will might prove to be money well spent.

Additionally, although he died in Selly Oak Hospital he was buried in Greenacres Cemetery in Oldham - alongside his wife Sarah Ann (who died in 1924) and 3 of their infant children. A very clear image of their headstone is freely accessible via findagrave.com.
