Struggling to find ancestor after 1861....would like some help please.
« on: Saturday 28 January 23 21:51 GMT (UK) »
I have recently been going over some old notes I made when I first started my family tree around 15 years ago. I initially carried on with ancestors where records were readily available but eventually I came to a halt and let my Ancestry subscription lapse three or four years ago.

A couple of fresh leads recently have kicked started my research, however, I have this last ancestor who I am still struggling with. William Cobb was born Cambridgeshire in 1843, I have his Baptism record for 23rd July 1843 and a mention on the 1851 and 1861 census. He was listed on the 1861 census as a Farm Servant to the Lovell family who were farmers of 26 acres in March in Cambridgeshire.

That is the last mention I can definitively find of him. Just wondering if anyone else has him in their tree or could help with offers of information or details after 1861 please.

Many thanks Steve  ;)

William Cobb was born Cambridgeshire in 1843,

Do you have a more accurate birthplace for him or does he just have the County in 1851/1861?

Thank you very much Milliepede for your two replies  ;D

The family lived in Guyhirn but I do have Wisbech listed as the place for his Baptism, hope this helps  ;)

Would be great to find out more if you think the mention of William on the army enlistment is actually him. Might explain why I cant find him after 1861.

Many thanks Steve

From his enlistment in the 17th Regiment of Foot in September 1865, the description is that he was 5 foot 9 tall, blue eyes, brown hair, fair complexion but bronzed by sun which would tie in with being a farm labourer. He left the army because he was medically unfit - problems with his eyesight. You can access the record on FindmyPast.
