I did not know about a will, but that looks promising. I wonder if National Archives have a record as well as Oxford Records Office.

Hi

I would doubt that the national archives would have a copy - I think the wills that they have copies of are the ones proved in the PCC (perogative court of canterbury) - they usually well-off people or people who owned property in more than one county - other wills were proved in the county courts and that is what is at Oxford R.O

However I have just found some more details of Matthews Whings will from a booklet produced by The Eureka Partnership - they have indexed persons named in diocesan wills proved 1774-1784 and fortunatly Mathew's is included.

he mentions
Son Joseph Whing
Wife Mary Whing
daughter Mary Whing
grandson Matthew Whing
son Matthew Whing
son Samuel Whing
son Thomas Whing - those are the people he mentions with the surname Whing - there may be other people with other surnames - I will go through the booklet and see if I can find any

Thank you Debbie

The names of children I hold from Matthew's union with Mary Terry are Kezia bapd 25/1/1774, Hannah bapd 1/1/1772, Sussanah bapd 22/10 1777, Matthew bapd 14/2/1780, and Elizabeth bapd 20/3/1778. So they don't all tie in with the will details exactly but there could be children I was unaware of and the female offspring may well have departed and not get a share of the will.

Does it give in your records any indication of Matthew's age at death or addresses?

Hi

Other names mentioned in the will are -

no relationship given
J. Blencowe
John Gregory
Samuel Grimbly
William Hartall

friends -
Richard Austin
Hawtry Huckell

daughter
Elizabeth Makepeace

From the Oxfordshire marriage index
William Makepeace - farmer married Elizabeth Whing at Wroxton 17th May 1773

so it looks as though we are looking at children of the earlier marriage here

Debbie

You could be right there. On igi no details of bapd of Elizabeth, hardly surprising as that record is incomplete.

If you have the Oxford marriage index is there any info on thw wedding between Matthew wing and Elizabeth Bradford on 18/4/1750 at Bloxham.

It becomes so frustrating, wish I had a time machine!

Hi

I have checked the index for that marriage - I am afraid there are no further details given

I have also had a look at the National Burial Index - which includes Bodicote - there are 21 W(h)ing burials - do you have them? do you want them? - the earliest  is about 1709 for another Matthew Whing - unfortunatly it seems that the registers did not record age at death at this time in this parish, so although a couple of them are marked infant - there is no way of telling if the rest are children or adults.  It is strange there are no entries for baptisms for this family at all in the IGI - Bodicote is partly covered - I wonder if they were non-conformist?

Debbie please forward burial details thank you. I had heard it said some where that the whings may have been associated with the Quakers.

I also wish I knew how you put in the little faces.

1753   Samuel   WHING      Oxon   Bodicote, St John the Baptist
1769   Sarah   WHING      Oxon   Bodicote, St John the Baptist
1787   Thomas   WHING      Oxon   Bodicote, St John the Baptist

Of these John 1709/10,  Robert 1721, Samuel 1723 and Matthew 1732 have wills surviving at Oxford Records Office there is also one for a Robert Whing snr yeoman dated 1686.

I also checked the IGi coverage for Bodicote baptisms - it is 1729-1812 90% - so I really would have thought that some of them should be there if they were being baptised in the Church of England - it certainly seems as though thats where they were in the 18th century

The little smilies are easy - when you hit the reply button and get the box up to type into there is a row of them just above it - click on the one you want and it will be added to your post - it won't look like it in the box (just a couple of symbols) but it will appear when your post is on the board

  ;) :)

Thank you for the details Debbie, that will give something to go at.

My principal name however is my Surname, it was a Kezia Whing bapd 25/1/1774 Adderbury who married my ggggggrandfather Samuel on 16/9/1793 at Adderbury. He originated from Broad Campden Glos bapd 1764, but lived in Bodicote with Kezia. It was because of Kezia I was trying to track Whing.

Thank you for the tip!!
