Can you help to find parents/siblings for William Callear m. Feb 4 1759?
« on: Sunday 29 January 23 17:01 GMT (UK) »
Many years ago, I traced my Callear family tree back to a William Calliears* who married a Phillis Calliear** in Feb 4 1759? I am sure that I found a connection to a Robert [who would then be William's father] but can not find it amongst my paper records [I'm trying to thin them out]

Can you help to find parents/siblings for William Callear m. Feb 4 1759?

I ask as I am trying to connect my tree to another tree - the holder of which has managed to trace back to a Robert (b. 1715) who is known to have had three sons: William, John and Thomas.

* The spelling varies a lot.
** Interesting to know if Phillis was actually a Callear too!

Phillis is a rather uncommon name, so I thought I'd look for her first.

There is a burial of a Phillis Calear, aged 63, in 1802 in Wellington. This gives an estimated birth year of 1739.

There is a baptism of a Phillis Gallier, daughter of Thomas & Anne, on 5th December 1740 in Wellington, which seems to fit.

Following the pattern of Callear being misheard as Gallier, there is a baptism of a William Gallier, son of Robert & Eliza, on 25th March 1738 in Wellington. I imagine this is the Robert connection you found.

Robert Gellear married Eliza Feariday on 2nd October 1732 in Wellington.

You are right when you say that the spellings are all over the place!

Thanks Queenie and emeltom

I am running without a subscription at the moment as I am supposed to be winding down the family tree research in readiness for the lighter nights and better weather! However, I must confess, that the sudden news of a researched "new" branch and the potential to link it to my own tree has caught my enthusiasm.

emelton - did you view the entry. Did it on its transcribed version offer the name of the fathers of William and Phillis (married in 1759). I think I could sleep better knowing this! Temptation may yet get the better of me to go looking further  :-[

Thanks for the reply emeltom. It looks as though that is a mystery that will last until after Summer!
