Diary Summary Week Ending 5th February 2023
« on: Monday 30 January 23 12:04 GMT (UK) »
As nobody has started a new Diary thread for this week, here goes:

It's National Chips, Cheese and Gravy day on the Isle of Man.

Every year - on the last Monday of January - the Island celebrates the unofficial national dish of the Manx people.  :D

That’s an interesting choice of food KG. Will you be having that today?

Tried it once - it's OK, but not really a fan!

My daughters lived here for 10 years or so (college and after); daughter #2 is a fan.

What came first - Manx chips, cheese and gravy, or poutine?  ;D

Sounds yum to me.  :)

That's a ongoing argument!
But the Canadian poutine is made with cheese curds and jus ;)
Manx CCG uses cheddar cheese and proper gravy :)

Chips & gravy - It's a no thanks from me.

I can't see why you'd make some nice crispy chips and then make them soggy by covering them with gravy.

Now if you’d said soup and chips then I’d be there… but not chips, cheese and gravy!

What’s the history behind that combination KG and are Manx chips different from ordinary chips?

Lovely sunny day today, still bit chilly but a joy to see all the spring flowers starting to show. We have yellow aconites around our sycamore tree in the front garden and they’ve nearly made a complete circle and they look lovely.
Pilates this morning which was great especially after all the boogieing I did on Saturday night at friends 70th!

Hope everyone has a good week whatever you’re up to.

Thoughts going out to Mare and all those in Auckland re dreadful flooding… sounds like you had a lucky escape there Mare! Glad you were able to enjoy your 50th celebration though.

My hometown in Quebec claims to be the birthplace of poutine (but I don't recall it being a "dish" until a couple of decades later) when I was a small child.  I do remember one could buy bags of curd cheese at the corner store as a snack item - my brother loved them.
Just to be a stickler - it is pronounced poo-tin, not poo-teen.  And I do think they use "proper" gravy if you mean thick rather than liquid-y.

I can't believe you have heard of poutine in Australia!
