How old is Harold Beauchamp?
« on: Monday 30 January 23 18:33 GMT (UK) »
I wonder when this photo of Harold, born in 1905 in Gloucestershire, was taken? He married at about 27 but probably younger here? I’ve tried to see what is on the paper he’s holding but can’t make it out. Maybe just a studio prop (the window looks like a studio background). There is no info on the back of the photo re a photographer or studio. He may have been in Warwickshire or Leicester depending on when it was taken.

Maybe mid-20.  There is no wedding ring on his hand - so probably before he married.
His tie and the type of shirt collar may enable the experts to give a date.
I note he is has a badge of some type on his left lapel (I cannot identify).

I would say this was a 1920s image, he looks to be around mid-late 20s.

I agree the piece of paper might be a studio prop. Looking at it as close as I can I think it says "Blank in/on Blank Photographs". Also there seem to be two pages, with the page facing away from us containing an image. Maybe it's the photographers brochure?

I agree he's over 21, but no more than 25 I think.
;D Doing my best, but frequently wrong ;D
:-* My thanks to everyone who helps me, you are all marvellous :-*

I think the papers would be an unnecessary prop, and don’t really add much to the composition, so I’m going to guess it has some meaning. Odd the way his fist is placed on them.

Regarding his age, I think it’s a difficult one. I’d say he could be anything between mid twenties to mid thirties - he may be one of those people who look older than their years.  :)

Thank you all for your answers. It is difficult to think of a reason why he’d have had a rather formal photo taken in his mid to late 20’s. It isn’t as if he ventured far from home (so not presumably a photo to be given to people he was leaving) since he started work in his father’s business around the mid 1920’s and even after marriage only lived in the next street. It is a strange, stiff portrait which is so different from the man I remember.

Dave :)

He has a badge or a pin on his lapel.
Was he a member of organisations of any sort?

I know he was in the Oddfellows but don’t know when he’d have joined. I’m not aware of any other organisation.

I think the wording on the paper/brochure says ‘How to Make Photographs’ (or possibly ‘Take’, but it looks more like an M to me.)
