James Hamilton, quilter
« on: Tuesday 31 January 23 14:44 GMT (UK) »
I am a volunteer researcher for the Quilters Guild of Great Britain. The Guild asks members who are also family historians to research the makers of quilts in their museum collection. I have been asked to research James Hamilton of Scotland, who made the quilt pictured here. However, I am having difficulty, and I wondered if anyone could help me, please, with some look ups. I only have access to basic Ance****, which has limited Scottish records. Here is what we have been told about James:
He was born in January 1872. So were a lot of other Scottish James Hamiltons.
In the 1891 census he was a tailor. I cannot find this reference. To me, the quilt looks as though it is made with fabrics a tailor might have to hand.
He had a daughter in 1915, when he was living at Smiths Place, Plains, by Airdrie.
I think a way forward might be to find him in the 1911 or 1921 censuses at the Plains address, and confirm his date of birth, and find out where he was born. But neither census is available to me. It would be good to know who the rest of his family were, and what sort of life he might have led in Plains at that time.
I would be grateful for any help or ideas anyone can give me, which will be properly acknowledged in the Guild’s archive.

Scottish Records are on https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk, all census returns, including the 1911 & 1921, you will not find them on any other at this time. Earlier returns are on Ancestry and other commercial sites and can be useful but you will only see transcripts, Birth, Marriage, death records and other information is on SP.

This is he and his family 1921 Census due to generosity of others that have helped me there is no need for any mention just glad to pay a wee bit back sorry only had the one credit left though today so plumped for this census. Meant to say that his birth place says Stirling Slamannan which was a mining town next to Plains plenty of my relatives worked in the mines there and about also many born and died there which I only found out through my family research so good to give a wee mention to the place it self also dosen't give an employer so like his neighbour he was prob self employed his neighbours daughter was also a dressmaker so there might be a wee connection.Garngad

Hi Harlem

What a great idea to do it this way, researching the story of the people behind the quilts!

I think James and Margaret's daughter, Barbara, married in Airdrie in 1951 to a James McCall Duff.

Her death shows in 1989:

BARBARA STEEL L HAMILTON/DUFF
Age 73
Mother's maiden name LIVINGSTONE
1989
564 / 85
Airdrie

I think her husband, James McCall Duff, aged 74, died in Airdrie in 1962.
