Marriage
« on: Wednesday 01 February 23 13:00 GMT (UK) »
I know Marriage laws vary from State to State and some can be quite complex, but briefly, are there/were there any restrictions on a man marrying his deceased wife's Sister, particularly in Ohio?

Regards Eric.

For what it's worth,

1. I grew up in Ohio and I don't remember ever hearing that it was illegal. When one of my mother's cousins died, the husband married his deceased wife's first cousin.

2. Nothing on this page mentions that as a restriction. They are concerned with people nearer than 2nd cousins, and same sex marriages

3. People on Quora say it's ok.

4. Including someone who says she is a lawyer in Pennsylvania.

5. I can picture it happening in a farming community if a man's wife dies young and he needs help maintaining the household and caring for young children.

Thanks for the reply. I got the impression that it was ok, but the laws surrounding marriage seem so much more involved than in the UK...just thought I'd double check. It wasn't legal in Britain for quite a while.

Incidentally, it's not my marriage...never again!

Many thanks, Eric.
