Elizabeth Oakley

I am looking for information about Elizabeth Oakley (Lizzie). Born  Jan 1881 - 1951. I believe she passed away at what was called Mendip Asylum. I can’t find any details about her time there.
I am seeking more information about her later life.
I am also seeking information about searching for women who were suffragettes. I believe Lizzie may have been - or one of her sisters.

Can you tell us where Elizabeth was born?  Do you know who her parents were and the names of her siblings?

I can't see any likely Elizabeth in the 1939 Register in Somerset.  Is Oakley her maiden name or married name?

The old newspapers are full of articles on suffragettes, and there was also a newspaper, named "The Suffragette".   (British Newspaper Archives / FindmyPast).  Many, many articles, and some fantastic photo's.

You say that she was born in January.  There are only two Elizabeth Oakley's born in that quarter:-

If she was in the Mendip Asylum that would suggest that she is the one born in Bath.  Can you confirm that?

Yes she was from Bath and her parents were Elizabeth White and Edwin Oakley.
Her maiden name was Oakley and I cannot find that she married.

I was unable to find records of her at the Mendip Asylum but I know she was there.

I will look at those newspapers thank you re. Names of suffragettes.

In case one of her sisters could have been the suffragette their names were; Mary Harriet Oakley and Emily A L Oakley.

This gives you Emily's full names:-

In the 1911 Emily is living in Crewkerne employed as a domestic nurse in the household of Reginald Hyatt Symons.  If Emily was a suffragette she wasn't missed off the 1911 census.

Mary appears to have married:-

OAKLEY    Mary Harriet        Keynsham    5c   1240

Added: Mary is in the 1911 with her husband and daughter living in Bath.

She died in 1959:

Oakley Elizabeth Sarah of 67 Hungerford Road Bath spinster died 11 March 1959 at Mendip Hospital Wells Somersetshire Probate 1 May to Albert Alfred Oakley retired electrician. Effects £584 19s 3d.

This confirms that she passed away at Mendip Hospital, as you believed.

There is an Elizabeth Sarah Oakley in the 1911 born in Bath and living in London.  Her birth year has been put down as 1883 but that may have been an error by the person filling in the form.
