William James Davies Uniform Indentification
« on: Wednesday 01 February 23 14:24 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I have these photos, which may be of my grandfather, William James Davies (d.o.b. 14/06/1877) as a young man, except that no one knew he had served in WW1 (he was a miner in South Wales - Tonypandy and later Ammanford).  There are so many WW1 records for William J Davies' that I don't know how to narrow them down. Any suggestions please?
Could anyone help me identify the uniform please, as that may be a start?
Grateful for any assistance
Many thanks, D

The collar badge looks as though it is for a Light Infantry regiment, possibly the (King's) Shropshire Light Infantry. Also, his shoulder title looks as though it ends in 'LI' -- I stand to be corrected by someone with more knowledge on this subject.

Allan and Jim, many thanks for your replies. That is interesting both the possibility of it being a Shropshire regiment and it being from 1920-1930. From the 1921 census I know my grandfather was back In Ammanford working as a miner and by 1925 he was a widower with two little boys, who was jailed for his part in the Battle of Ammanford miners' strike. Perhaps it is not him after all. I will do some more digging using the information you have offered.
Thanks again for your help, D

The 3 soldiers are probably KSLI but it's not WW1.  The middle man has KSLI title on his shoulder but this was introduced inn 1921.  It was not normal for collar badges to be worn in WW1.  the photos are 1930s or 30s.  By 1940 the tunics worn had been replaced by Battledress.  These are not your ancestor if he was born before 1900.

The lone soldier is a Hussar judging by his tunic so pre WW1.

Welcome to Rootschat DinahD :)

Not in relation to anything military, but there is something written on the pic of the lone soldier. Do you have any idea what it says?

Looks like yours....possibly Owen?.....

Cas

Dear Alan,

Thank you so much for that information. This has confirmed that it is not my grandfather, as both census information and court documents place him in Ammanford, West Wales and the mines there during the 1920s (he was one of the Miner's arrested and jailed for his part in The Battle of Ammanford in 1925). It must be another member of the family but who, I do not know but looks like he was a career soldier as the Hussar is the same man as the man on the right in the KSLI uniform. Thanks again.

Cas - on the front it says 'yours Will' and on the back 'To Dad, yours Will.'
This is why it was given to me. It was in the possession of my grandfather's brother's family (who lived in the house of my great grandfather). They assumed it must be my grandfather as they didn't know any other William but I wasn't sure because no one had ever mentioned him serving in the army.

What address(es) do you have in Ammanford Dinah?
Absent Voters list are available for that area for 1919-1920.

Hi Gwil, thank you for your message.
He is listed as a miner (out of work) at 21 High Street, Ammanford, which I believe was the address of his recently-deceased father-in-law's draper shop.
Kind regards,
Catrin
