Groom's father?
« on: Wednesday 01 February 23 14:44 GMT (UK) »
This snip is from the Aug 1862 marriage of  Henry Davies to Mary Ann Hopkins in Neath, Glamorgan.
Can anyone help with the name of the groom’s father? I am having a hard time finding Henry before 1862.

Thanks Osprey. I had already wondered about Owen, but it hasn't help me find Henry.

what is his place of birth according to the census?

There's this possible Owen from 1841 who is shown as labourer but neighbours are coppermen so in the right area.

My problem is, I can't find him on the census.
At the time of his marriage he is living in Skewen, so I thought I might find him there in 1861.
He and his wife emigrated to Australia in 1864.

That census looks the most promising so far. I will do some work with that and see where it leads.

I think the marriage for that couple is
1 June 1826 Swansea St James by licence
Owen Davies & Ann Viney/Vininy witnesses John ? Vininy, James Ball & William Davies

birth reg
Henry Davies jun qtr 1839 Swansea vol 26 pg 259 mmn Vininy

Burial Llangyfelach 11 Aug 1848 Owen Davies 74 Craig Trewyddfa (same as census)

1851 census at Graig Trewyddfa
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:SG8J-PQ9
Henry shown as born Somerset but it could be that the lines were mixed up on census return and that it was Ann, now remarried, who was born in Somerset, she was not born in county in 1841. Haven't found a parish marriage for David & Ann - possible reg june qtr 1849 Swansea vol 26 pg 836.
Possible 1861 census in Skewen

Thanks Osprey, that is much the same information as I have come up with following through from the 1841 census you suggested. The father Owen died and his wife Ann remarried.
Good to see your work confirms my direction.
