Just a thought, but I note from the children's baptisms that Evan was a mariner, so it is possible he could have been away for a significant amount of time for work.

Still not sure about the Arthur witness, but I did find another possible link. Robert Arthur of Llanaber married Mary Roberts on 8th November 1771 in Dolgellau. One of the witnesses looks like it is the same person as on Catherine's marriage entry.

I wouldn't say it is much clearer, but the first letter looks a lot more like an 'R' rather than an 'A.'

1.  It seems to me that the baptisms in 1776 and 1779 were to the same parents.

2.  I stand corrected on the sex of witnesses;  could it be Anne?

I was wondering about Rees/Rice as well.

Possible marriage by licence in Llanelltyd 15 April 1800 Rees Arthur, widower, of Llanaber & Elinor Pugh, spinster, otp, witnesses Wm Pugh & Robert Arthur.

Just saw the same marriage entry osprey did and I agree with Rice.

There is a marriage bond available at the National Library, which might add some detail

Also for Rees Arthur

There are some baptisms which might be significant if using patronimics

Robert Jones on 24 Jun 1747 son of Arthur and Catherine of Derwas in Dolgellau

Rice Jones on 19 May 1749 son of Arthur and Catherine of Derwas in Dolgellau

Rice Arthur of Derwas buried on 13 Dec 1749 in Dolgellau

Rice Jones on 5 Feb 1750 son of Arthur and Catherine of Derwas in Dolgellau

Catherine Jones on 20 May 1753 daughter of Arthur and Catherine, of Llwyndu, in Llanaber

Robert Arthur of Llanaber, married Mary Roberts on 8 Nov 1771 in Dolgellau - bond available
Witness was Rice Arthur with same signature as before

Arthur, Rice, bach., yeoman, Llanaber, Merioneth to Ellis, Margaret, sp., Llanfair, Merioneth : 1775 Feb. 9.
Bond only but I can't see a parish marriage (did it take place?)
Could account for the second marriage which was witnesses by Robert Arthur

David

P.S. Arthur Jones married Catherine Roberts in Dolgellau on 27th April 1736

There is a bond following the death of Arthur Jones of Llanaber, which names Catherine Roberts, widow, of Barmouth, and Rice Arthur of Bwlch-coch, signed by both.

David,

That's a lot of info - many thanks. Please bear with me - it's going to take me some time to get my head around it all

David,

Just had a look at your first Marriage Bond, which is for the marriage which was the start of this thread. Interestingly, it is dated 21 Nov 1776 whilst the marriage date is 22 Nov 1776. Is this normal?

Also, it tells us that Evan EVANS was a 'shoemaker'
