Marriage John Goulding and Ann Robinson
« on: Wednesday 01 February 23 19:19 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for information about John Goulding, Davenham 1802 and Ann 1803 of Knutsford/Kelsall (I know there is a distance between, but that is what the transcriptions say). His mother was Alice Goulding 1766. They are on the 1841 census with children at Leigh’s Works. From the censuses, only John Goulding b. 1840 is on the GRO (Apr-Jun 1839 mmn Robinson). There is a baptism in Davenham, 1802, which I believe is John. There are two intended marriages with a John Goulding, 25 Dec 1825 to Ann Birtles and 15 Jul 1827 to Ann Williams both in Davenham. I cannot find a marriage, or intention, to Ann Robinson. There is a baptism for an Ann Robinson in Tarvin, February 1804, which may be her.

Can anyone find a marriage?

A secondary question. The earliest online map is from 1874/5 and does not show Leigh’s Works. From the area, it is probably related to the salt industry. Does anyone have information about Leigh’s Works, and why would they be living there?

From the censuses, only John Goulding b. 1840 is on the GRO (Apr-Jun 1839 mmn Robinson).

I think you may have mixed up two different families.

The John Goulding born to John & Ann was baptised in late 1831. On the 1851, his estimated birth year is 1833.

The John Goulding registered in 1839 was most likely the son of Thomas Goulding and Elizabeth Robinson. He had an younger sister called Hannah (1840) registered in the same district.

It looks like your John & Ann had:
- John (1831)
- William (1835)
- Thomas (1839)

Fidler - West Ilsley, Berkshire
Hamlin/Hamlyn - Long Sutton & Martock, Somerset
Head - Marlborough & Alton Priors, Wiltshire
Minson - Kingstone, Somerset/Symondsbury, Dorset
Owsley - Buckland St Mary, Somerset
Pyke - (West) Weeke/Wick, Pewsey, Wiltshire
Salisbury - Dowlish Wake/West Dowlish, Somerset

The actual parish register entry for John Goulding born 1801 is very interesting as it is a variation on the Dade registers of Yorkshire:

John, son of John Goulding of Davenham, Labourer.  John senior is the son of Mary Garside of Bostock.
Mother is Alice, daughter of Thomas and Ellen Worrall of Cuddington.

Joseph's baptism in 1799 gives the same information for the parents and grandparents.

AMENDED:  Joseph's entry says that John Goulding's mother is Mary Goulding, rather than Garside.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

No problem, and the parish register images are available via FindMyPast.

The register image is again available via FindMyPast - both John (bridegroom) and Joseph (witness) have the surname Goulden.  John makes his mark and Joseph signs.

ADDED:  and the marriage venue was St John the Baptist, Knutsford.
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
