Police superintendent in Bedfordshire in the 1920s.
« on: Wednesday 01 February 23 21:53 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to trace any information on Frederick William WARREN.

What I have so far:Born 1871 in Buckinghamshire
He was a Boer war soldier no: 79907 with the Royal Horse Artillery
He served in South Africa.
He was married to Ethel.
He appears to have lived in Hertfordshire throughout his life.
I have an address in 1921 of Police station yard, Bancroft, Hitchin Herts.
I am looking for any other information to expand what I have on his police career, not sure if there would be any photos taken in that era.
Any input wold be appreciated

You mention that he lived in Hertfordshire all of his life, what information do you have that supports that he was a Police Superintendent in Bedfordshire

ADDED. Have you looked at Bedfordshire Archives website for any mention of him

As rosie99 said, why do you believe that he was a police superintendent in Bedfordshire? The 1921 census to which you refer states that his employer is Herts County Council.

There is a website dedicated to the history of Hertfordshire policing, and there is this article:
https://www.hertspastpolicing.org.uk/content/police-history/police/mutual-aid-policing-coal-strikes-between-1911-and-1926

about the coal strikes. Scroll down to the second photo of a group of policemen; one of them is Sergeant 55B Frederick William Warren. I can't imagine there were too many Frederick William Warrens in the Hertfordshire police!

Hi all and thanks for your interest and replies.
I managed to get printouts of the 1911 and 1921 census returns, his occupation states police sergeant and police superintendent, I was not sure of his employer, however went on the 1921 address of `police station yard in Hitchin.
Thanks for the steer regards the photo, I have seen him in a 1911 photo at Gilfach gosh colliery.
I will keep trying to see if there are any other later photos of him in uniform with his medals.
Thanks again for the information you have provided

Have you tried local newspapers.  As he was employed in Hitchin, Hertfordshire in 1921 then the first place to be looking for police records would be Hertfordshire constabulary

Electoral Registers have Frederick William and Ethel Mary Warren at the Police Station, Bancroft from spring 1919 to spring 1923.

The autumn Electoral Register, 1923 has the pair at 13 Balmoral Road. The Autumn Electoral Register, 1925 has them at 22 Ickfield Road where the last sighting I have is Autumn 1929.

At different times a Cecil Warren and Reginal Warren appear with them.

His probate record gives his address as 22 Icklefield Road - probate granted 2 July 1931 to Ethel Mary and Reginald Sidney Clifford Warren, police constable.

Sorry for delay in responding, work commitments!!

Thank you for that information, the probate info ties up his life from 1870s to 1930s, I was not sure of a death date.
I noticed on his 1911 group police photo  that he had 2 medal ribbons(i think,) I know one is for the boar war, not sure what the other one is for??
I'm going to try a search of Hertford newspapers as suggested to see if I can beef out his career.
Thanks again to all that have replied
Jack

Not sure if you received my pm's before this thread was moved to the Bedfordshire board. There are a few newspaper items that mention Frederick William WARREN and his police career.

there is an item from 1910 in the Daily Telegraph which mentions Sergeant Frederick William WARREN of Hitchin - he discovered the body of a dead child in a vegetable patch, (how tragic and horrifying).

Also a note of his retirement as Police Superintendent in 1923 due to ill health
