Chauffeur
« on: Thursday 02 February 23 09:54 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

My Grandmother's brother, Maitland Scott (1874 - 1964), was the chauffeur for a person living close to the Albert Hall in London, in the early 1900s.

This person had an estate close to Thames Ditton, Surrey, as Maitland married the gamekeeper's daughter, Adeline Alice Pratley, at St. Nicholas, Thames Ditton on 8th Nov 1905.

I wonder if anyone is able to identify the estate in question and the owners, please?

Thanks,

Gordon

I'm a little confused - the marriage entry for Maitland and Alice at Thames Ditton in 1905 says that Maitland is an Engineer and lived at 48 Queen's Gate Mews, South Kensington.
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Just looking through newspapers for any driving convictions to see if there are any clues. There were a few reports. This one is from York in 1905

Ah - 1911 census says he is a chauffeur - same address as marriage entry.

As you probably know from their marriage certificate Adeline Alice Pratley was living at 12 Adelaide Terrace, Thames Ditton  at the time of her marriage. Looking back to the 1901 census for the same address, her father William Charles Pratley aged 68 is shown as a retired gamekeeper, born in Widford in Oxfordshire, living in the household of his step son Frederick Taylor a gardner (non domestic). Going back to 1891 William Charles Pratley was a gamekeeper living in Warrington Cottage. Hersham, Chertsey in Surrey. So it seems quite possible that WCP was not employed as gamekeeper while in Thames Ditton as he was retired.

In the 1901 Census Adeline Alice is shown as a domestic housemaid (along with her sister Risa who is a cook) in the household of solicitor Harry G Abrahams at Walton Road, West Molesey. Walton Road is quite long, but at its eastern end it runs into Thames Ditton.

So none of that helps to identify the esate belonging to Maitlland's employer. How do you know he had an estate there and do you know the employer's name?

Added. I see from the cutting above that the employer was a Mr Cormack.

Basically, Maitland was a mechanical engineer. The early cars were not very reliable so required drivers  who knew how they worked.

He ended his working life with Ford at Dagenham.

Maitland's uncle, Maitland, was a marine engineer in the Dundee shipyards. The family produced several notable engineers.

Thanks for the several replies, while I was typing a bit about Maitland's family.

I have found a couple of motoring offences - one for exceeding the speed limit in a royal park and another for not having a man with a red flag.
