West Hackney Coroners Inquest 1885.....help required please.
« on: Thursday 02 February 23 13:17 GMT (UK) »
I have been very fortunate recently in finding an ancestor of mine who I was struggling to trace. With the kind help and assistance of some brilliant forumers  ;D it has been possible to trace him until his sad passing  :(

https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=869751.0

I have been quite obsessed with my ancestor and elected to order a duplicate PDF death certificate. It arrived this morning but I am quite saddened by the contents. Its appears he died in a Sewer Workings in what looks like John Campbell Road in West Hackney. The description and residence of informant states Certificate received from John Humphreys, Coroner for Middlesex. Inquest held tenth June 1885.

My question is.....Can I obtain or gain access to information regarding the Inquest?

Many thanks in anticipation for all offers of help and advice  ;)

Steve

Survival of Inquest records is, unfortunately, rather random.  I would suggest you contact the London Metropolitan Archives with details from the death certificate (date, name of deceased and name of Coroner) to ask if they hold the file.

I found one there from 1904 but have drawn blanks with other enquiries.

Another potential source is local newspapers.

Good Luck!

Thank you very much nanny jan for your reply  ;D

Did a quick search and found that the Hackney and Kingsland newspaper was about at the time. I have managed to locate and access three newspaper articles regarding this tragic event including a report on the Inquest. Makes for very sobering reading and I dont mind declaring it brought a lump to my throat. That is part of the highs and lows of family tree research I suppose.

Anyway, many thanks once again.

Yes, newspaper reports can be hard to deal with but well done on finding no less than three!

Thank you very much Cathy for your reply and the link  ;D . I can confirm that the article detailed in your link isn`t one of three that I found, so I will need to download that one too  ;)

Being a North Londoner with lots of knowledge of Hackney, Dalston(misspelt in the newspaper) etc, I would recommend putting an enquiry to the nearby huge Abney Park Cemetery. There is now a Trust facility who may be able to assist you with a possible burial for William. Depends on how keen you are!

I will have to have a think on that one as there are other certificates I need to order from the GRO ( the William Cobb death certificate I obtained recently "queue jumped" my existing list of ancestor certificates ). As you mention depends how keen I am..... ;)
