Non-conformist records
« on: Friday 03 February 23 20:00 GMT (UK) »
Hello, I am trying to trace some of my ancestors who were from Hanley area in Staffordshire. I believe the were non conformist and I am struggling to find many records.
I am back to Charles Billington born 1805 Hanley. His mother was called Mary, which was confirmed when she gave permission for him to marry Hannah Forrester in 1826.
There is a Richard Billington who was married to a Mary, who moved from Hanley to Dumfries in Scotland. He died in 1824. Looking at the 1841 census I think Mary remarried a Mr Henderson. I then think I have found a birth record in 1833 for their son Robert in Dumfries. Father Joseph Henderson and mother Mary Breadbory (probably Bradbury).
There seems to be no trace of a marriage for Mary to either. Can anyone help?!

Is this the 1841 census you refer to Mary Henderson living in Dumfries
Mary Henderson 50 bn England
Robert Henderson 8
Joseph Henderson 6
Thomas Henderson 3
Jane Billington 20
Mary Billington 15
Ann Billington 25
Sarah Crosbie 25
Mary Crosbie 1
William Charters 15

In 1851 she is still in Dumfries and amongst those in her household was her daughter Mary Hall a widow age 27 who was born in Dumfries, presumably Mary Billington from previous census.

Yes, that’s the right family! Thanks for sharing.
I can find Charles baptism on familysearch, find my past or ancestry. Is there another avenue anyone knows of?

and going down the lists of options.....

Under discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk and the heading

Manchester University: Methodist Archives and Research Centre : there is under the Heading:  Organisations (159)

Hanley Methodist New Connexion District: Hanley, Staffordshire

1838-1907 minutes and schedules : held at Manchester University etc etc.

Then, if you Google the above -  the University website : Methodist Heritage has a website - with opening hours etc.

Hello
Just a thought
Richard Billington s of Richard and Sarah bapt 8 July 1777 Burslem St John

Siblings John 8.11.1773 Burslem St J-24.12.1837 ,Thomas 23.1.1776 Burslem ,James 4.5.1780 Son t,William 9.5.1782 Son t ,Henry 14.1.1784 Son T,Sarah 28.3.1786 Son T, Charles 20.1.1790 Son T

Will of Richard Billington senior 1805 £3500 (burial 17th July 1805 of Eturia Burslem St John)
Mentions an earthenware business and it's stock in Euturia to be shared and worked between sons John, William ,Richard and James.
Wife Sarah to be supported for life
Also a farm at Whitfield Staffordshire and House in Stoke on Trent where he lives.

Could this be the impetus for Richard and Mary to move.He was allowed money in loo if he didn't want to take part with his brothers and the Trustee conditions for the 4 brothers seem quite tight.

Richard Billington senior married Sarah Hand by licence 17.1.1773.They were both 24 and Richard is described as a schemer. Both of Son T.

There is a George and Martha Bradbury having children in Stoke
Mary Ann 13.4.1794,Elisaby 7.8.1796,George 24.1.1798 William 15.6.1800,and Josiah 20.5.1802

For some reason they married at Whitmore 30.6.1793 both of Stoke. George Bradbury and Martha Whearham.

In theory you should be able to find her parents on Mary's Scottish death certificate. And hopefully details of her marriages.

Thank you, thats really helpful! I havent managed to find her death yet. She remarried to Joseph Henderson after Richard died. I havent found the record of their marriage, but it was confirmed through census's and baptism's.
