Have you seen this latest update information?  I do hope it is helpful  8)

https://www.gov.uk/get-copy-military-service-records/apply-for-someone-elses-records

ADDED:  Not sure whether this is the original information or not.

From 1 April 2023 it will be free to apply for a military service
record from the MOD. You’ll need to pay the £30 fee if you submit an
application before 1 April.
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
Remember - "They'll be found when they want to be found" !!!
If you don't ask the question, you won't get an answer.

Service records are currently being transferred to TNA.

There have been discussions elsewhere on rootschat about this and apparently TNA will not be issuing any service records till 115 years after the birth of the serviceperson.

Yes,  what I understand from all this - you can apply for records (free from 1 April 2023), however you need to provide a death certificate, unless the person was born more than 116 years ago.

Well, I should be ok. My grandfather was born in 1906 so he would turn 117 in October 2023

It looks like I won't benefit as my father was a Merchant Seaman (Merchant Navy)  :(...

Merchant seamen's records are not affected by this. They are still held in the Fourth and Fifth Register of Seamen and are available as normal.

Which means I will have the normal £30.00 fee to pay, it won't be free.
