Richard & Cicely Northwood wills look up
« on: Monday 06 February 23 21:59 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I am hoping some-one could look at the following two wills on the Staffordshire, Diocese of Lichfield & Coventry Wills & Probate database:

  1. Richard Northwood probate 1729 labourer of Shifnal Shropshire
  2. Cicely Northwood probate 1736 widow of Ryton Shropshire

I am looking for any mention of their son Richard and in particular if he is located somewhere in London.

It's a long shot hope for a connection.

Thanks, Colin

I don't have a findmypast subscription.

According to the Staffordshire names index
https://staffsnameindexes.org.uk/

In the index of wills:

Richard Northwood of The Heath Yate House, Shifnal, labourer.
31 Oct 1729
Lichfield Consistory Court.
No will, only an administration and an Inventory.

Cicely Northwood of Rydon Shropshire. widow.
Lichfield Consistory Court
No will, again an Administration and an Inventory.

familysearch, org have the films for Lichfield Consistory court - hundreds of them!
I think the one you need is film number 7623004 - Original wills, administrations, inventories L-N 1729.
There is a search facility on the films (magnifying glass next to film icon) - supposedly, but it's not working.
Unfortunately the films are locked, which means you can only view them at an LDS centre, but you might be near one if all else fails.

The 1736 film I - R is number 7623048.

Administration of Cicely’s estate was applied for by Henry Northwood. It doesn’t say (that I can see) what his actual relationship to her was)

Cicely (Cicelia) was the one granted admin for Richard.

Thank you all for your responses, and I apologise for taking a little while to acknowledge them.

It would seem obvious that if Richard left no will then his wife Cicely would seek administration of Richard's estate.

I also seems to make sense that Henry, being the oldest son of Richard & Cicely, would seek administration of his mother's estate.

However, I believe Richard had older children by another wife, Ann.

Below are the baptisms I believe are relevant:

14 Dec 1693 at Shifnal Elizabeth Northwood d/of Richard
28 Apr 1696 at Shifnal  Mary Northwood d/of Richard & Ann
21 Feb 1697 at Beckbury Richard s/of Richard & Ann

11 Sep 1702 at Beckbury Henry s/of Richard & Cicely
5 Jan 1703 at Beckbury Elizabeth d/of Richard & Cicely
29 Oct 1704 at Beckbury Cicely d/of Richard & Cicely
23 Mar 1706 at Beckbury Walter s/of Richard & Cicely
18 Mar 1708 at Beckbury Rachel d/of Richard & Cicely
25 Aug 1712 at Beckbury Christiana d/of Richard & Cicely
7 Aug 1715 at Beckbury Thomas s/of Richard & Cicely

Unfortunately I can't find either wedding or the death of Ann Northwood 1697-1702

I am trying to connect the son Richard b1697 to the Richard having children baptised in Clerkenwell London between 1727 and 1742 whose wife is also Ann.

Thanks for the other administrations.  I think that Richard d1695 is the father of Richard d1729 and the John d1705 and his named family members are siblings to the elder Richard.

However, it doesn't help me connect to my Richard in Clerkenwell 20-30 years later.

Oh well, thanks everyone for trying.
