Occupation provision worker
« on: Monday 06 February 23 23:01 GMT (UK) »
I found a relative living in Aberdeen (Gallowgate) between 1881 and 1901.

She is described as being a provision worker.

Does anyone know what this would have been?

Worked for a grocer and provision merchant, or in some other branch of the food industry?
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

I think it is more a job in the processing of food before it reaches the shop.

Aberdeen Daily Journal 18-11-1915:

BUTCHER - Wanted, Smart Lad or GIRL (who has
been a provision worker, capable of cutting or
boning) to assist in shop. Apply 23 Justice Street.

Aberdeen Press and Journal 1-10-1925:

... James Dunbar, provision worker ... pleaded guilty to having, from premises in Albert Quay, yesterday, stolen a barrel containing 1 1/2 cwts of fat trimmings, 30 lbs of white meal and a jute bag ... Dunbar had been in the responsible position of foreman at the firm ...

Looks like a provision worker has indeed got something to do with preparing food before it reaches the sales point.
Her death certificate gives her profession as provision factory forewoman.

Must have been lucrative by the size of her estate. ( circa £125,000 in today’s money)  Either that or she was very frugal. Or both!

Unfortunately I’m too distant a descendant to have feel the benefit!🤣
