Death certificate Thomas Dorsey, July 4,1867 in Owatonna
« on: Monday 06 February 23 23:34 GMT (UK) »
There are many newspaper articles about the stabbing to death of Thomas Dorsey, July 4,1867 in Owatonna. However, there is no information about his age, wife or children. Perhaps his death certificate would help with that. I am told that there might be a death certificate at the court house.
After his death, there are Dorsey children staying with my Duffin relatives in Minnesota and wondered if there is a family connection to this death.
Thanks for any help.

How have you connected that 1867 death to the Dorsey children with your relatives in 1870?

1870 US census for Minnesota shows a 9yr old William Dorsey b Minnesota living in Kalmar Township, Olmsted, with James & Mary Duffin

11yr old John Dorsey b Wisconsin & 15yr old Thomas also b Wisconsin with John & Sarah Duffin in Olmsted

Have you checked the 1860 census for the 11 & 15yr old to check parentage?

Looks like there were no death records in Minnesota before 1870.  https://www.familysearch.org/en/wiki/How_to_Find_Minnesota_Death_Records#Deaths_before_1870

For what it's worth, the tree at familysearch has William Arthur Dorsey, born 1861, as the son of Michael Dorsey and Mary Heffran, with siblings John born 1859, Thomas born 1853, and others. The father, Michael, died in 1863. Mary Heffran is said to have remarried in 1869, to James Friary. All of which might explain why the children were in other households.

Thank you very much, CaroleW, shellyesq, and oldohiohome. So these children are not connected to the death of Thomas Dorsey. And we know why the children are in different households, although we don’t know why the Duffin households.
Thanks again everyone.
