William Thompson - born abt 1837 in Ironbridge area
« on: Wednesday 08 February 23 22:59 GMT (UK) »
Evening

I wonder if anyone can help me locate parents for William Thompson.

The first i find of William is when he marries Rosetta Stretch in 1858 in Wolverhampton, Staffordshire.  On his marriage certificate he is of full age and a boatman.  He lists his father as Isaac Thompson a saw maker.

In the census', William (and Rosetta) are:

1861 - living in Wolverhampton, (under Tompson) as visitors  in the Johnstone household; William is aged 23 (so born abt 1837/38; still a boatman; and states that he is born in Shropshire.
1871 - living in Stoke On Trent; as a Wharf Waggoner; aged abt 30 (so born abt 1840/41); and states born Madeley, Shropshire.
1881 - living in Coventry; aged 42 (so born abt 1838/39); a licensced Victualler and Boatman; and born Ironbridge, Shropshire.
1891 - living in Stoke On Trent; aged 54 (so born about 1836/37); a Boatman - canal barge; and again born in Ironbridge, Shropshire.
1901 - living in Stoke on Trent; aged 62 (so born abt 1838/39); a Boatman - barge; and again born Ironbridge, Shropshire.

William dies in 1906 in Stoke On Trent region, aged 69 (so born abt 1837).

I cannot locate William in 1841 or 1851 census; and i cannot locate a suitable baptism.  I have found a baptism in 1844 in Wellington Shropshire of a William Thompson to an Isaac and Ann, but that seems very late (particularly as he married in 1858) and also the baptisms of that wider family group sit around that date.

Can anybody help me find William and his family?

Thanks

TB

That William was born and died in 1844 - son of Isaac Thompson and Ann Richards. So agree he is not yours. That family don't seem to have a William apart from that infant death.

There is a family in the 1841 census Madeley Wood,  Shropshire
Isaac Thompson 45 – “lime man”
Mary Thompson 50
And four other Thompsons - Elizabeth 15, Martha 10, Maria, 10 and Joseph 5, and a servant girl.
Although there is no William there, I wonder if there is some link to this family. Maybe William was an illegitimate son of a daughter from this family or of the servant??  ???
There are some other Thompson families living beside them.
On the same page there are a number of watermen with the surname BODEN

There is a Thompson family at Ironbridge in 1841 – John 42 (dyer) and Catherine (40) and their family, but again, no William.

Thankyou both.

I’ve just picked this up again and if really helps to have assistance with a sense check as I just could not find anything concrete relating to Williams birth family.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed that someone will spot something I haven’t!

Thanks garstonite.

That is an interesting possibility. Can that family be located on the census’ and can  any children be found?
