Thanks for all the info and comments.
Obviously family story about a French girl was wrong (unless Beatrice Mary died young) and Beatrice  was in fact British.
He returned to the UK in 1914 at the start of the war, so as an engineer useful in the armed forces.
Re 1911 census could have been in South Africa with father and married sister?

Manukarik, thank you. I think that answers why he might not have been in the UK for the 1911 census.

Re: Married in France? Correction

I have been told that I have the wrong info about Leonard. He died without issue and did not marry a French girl. Apologies for leading people astray.

The French connection comes via Leonard's younger sister, Maud Ellen Harvey born 23/11/1873, Lowestoft who married Edward Llewellyn Humphreys at St Mathias Church, Tulloc Hill, London on 2/9/1903. They had one son, Wilfred 'who married a French girl and lived in France'. I have no info on their son.
Again, sorry for incorrect info initially. My query though is still how to trace this couple, Wilfred plus wife, in France on this small amount of info?

A correction for you. I think that St Mathias Church is in Tulse Hill, South London.

Found nothing in France for Wilfred for the right time frame. Too many to trawl through in UK without additional info.
