More precisely, he was an artificer sergeant, which is a form of specialist in either vehicle mechanics, electrical equipment or weapons. Current day badges below

Hi nanny jan and Jebber,

This would indicate he was a staff/colour sergeant as there appears to be something above the chevrons? Also, do you have any idea of the badge on his breast pocket?

No, he was a sergeant. The emblem above his stripes indicates he was an artificer.

It’s not very easy to tell but it looks like the Medal ribbon of the 1939-1945 Star.

The REME Museum in Lynham May be able to help. Their historian helped me enormously several years ago, providing a very detailed interpretation of my uncle’s service record (he’s since left, so I don’t know if the current historian offers the same service.
