Henry Hull [or Hall] and Susanna Chapman
« on: Tuesday 14 February 23 16:09 GMT (UK) »
I hope someone can help me here.

Henry Hull [or Hall - the writing is unclear] married Susanna Chapman at Worth, Sussex on 30 April 1704. On the parish register entry he is described as being "of Bolney" and she is "of Burstow".

So far I can't locate Burstow on the map but I'm sure I've seen it. I don't know how old Susanna was but I estimate she was probably in her 20s as she had four children between 1706 and 1713. Can anyone pinpoint "Burstow" or suggest a possible christening for her?

Henry himself is a bit more tricky. Sometimes on the original registers the name clearly looks like "Hall" with the top of middle letter clearly closed, but in other cases it is open making the name "Hull" and the records seem to have been transcribed with both spellings. I expect it should be "Hull" as it is spelt that way in later records. Again I have not been able to pinpoint a Henry Hull or "Hall" in Bolney or the nearby area that might tie up with this marriage.

Does anyone have any ideas for Henry at all?

Thanks in advance for any ideas and help.

Matt

Hi Matt, the detail of their marriage licence from Archdeaconry of Chichester states Susannah Chapman of Burstow in Surrey so may be worth looking there.

Pheno

Added: according to Google there is a Burstow in/near Horley, which is in Surrey.

Thanks for that. According to the transcript which Queenie gave the link to Susanna was from "Barstow, co Surrey" so this seems to be the place. Time for me to go back to the map and see if I can track anyone down in that area.

Thank you again

Matt

Thanks for the transcript. I've seen the original [which I can't find now] but I hadn't seen this. Interestingly this transcript gives Henry's place of residence as "Bouncy". I've found the record on Ancestry which also seems to have "Bouncy" on but I can't see a place by that name.

Hopefully I can find the copy of the record I have and compare them.

I should have put on my original message that the surname spelling seems to vary with his children, and between records. In one case I found a record where the PR looks like Hall but the BT which looks clearer seems to say Hull lol! In most cases it seems to be "Hall" though so I will look out for that name.

At least I have some bits to go with here.

Many thanks
Matt

This may be a possible christening for Susannah

Susanna Chapman dau of William and Jane 1 September 1677 Blectchingley, Surrey.

Bletchingley is only a short distance from Horley and borders Burstow so I definitely think it's worth looking into. The mother's name is either Jane or Jone, Familysearch has "Jane" and Ancestry has "Jone" and it looks more like "Jone" on the actual register entry. Unfortunately I can't find a marriage for William but I have found other children.

Definitely onto something here I think.

Did Henry & Susannah have any children called William or Jane?

That might be another clue to parentage.
