Sea defencibles Whitby Yorkshire
« on: Tuesday 14 February 23 18:55 GMT (UK) »
I am looking into the Raistrick family in Whitby and I believe that one of them, Thomas Raistrick born 1780 was signed up to the Defncibles during 1805. Arethere likelyto be any records in the local archives or do I have to go to the Public Records Office for this sort of information. I am not quite sure what they would be classified under, and they were not of course around for very long. Thanks

I would try here first: https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/record?catid=131&catln=3. Note that you will probably have more success searching with the term 'sea fencible'. There may also be some records in the local record office

Thank you. I will give it a try. I will also see if there is a local history society.

The Whitby Lit. & Phil. may have something in their document records.

PS - Whitby historically was in the North Riding not the East Riding. Modern designations have no relevance for anything that happened more than about 50 years ago.  Maybe some kind Moderator can move the query.
