Hi Rootschatters

Hope you can help. Im not looking for a tidy up but just a rough date for this picture of my friend David's grandfather - apologies I dont have his name but they lived in North London all their lives

It is a studio shot but the image itself is no longer in its original studio slip so there are no clues there Im afraid!

Thanks in advance!

The collar and tie suggest 1900-1905 but might be a few years later.

I would agree, I have a photo of my Grandfather with a similar collar and tie dated around 1902

The start date is 1890's as this is when this ensemble became popular for men.
The soft oval vignette style of photo is also 1890's.

Just looked at another book after your post, Jim. I see that very high collars started in 1890 and reached 3 inches by 1899 and high shirt collars to 1905.

Thanks for the update Jim and Gadget. Im seeing my friend next week and he is keen to prise the picture out of it's home-made frame to see if there are any clues on the back

Glad he is doing it and not me, that is for sure. The chap in the photo was a carpenter and made the frame himself, the back is held on with a lot of panel pins and the mount isnt mountcard, but a thin wood like balsa

This has been restored so some of the detail has been lost.
