Rickinghall PR baptism lookup, please - JAMES DRIVER 1805
« on: Thursday 16 February 23 16:25 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to find the correct mother of James Driver, baptised at Rickinghall Inferior on 30th April 1805.

There are two entries on FindMyPast. The first is transcribed by FamilySearch. Mother is Mary Driver, no father.

The second entry on FindMyPast (transcribed by Suffolk FHS) has more detail: bapt 23rd June, but the Notes state "bn 27 Apr; pb 30 Apr; recd", so I assume a private baptism was performed by a midwife or similar until a parish baptism could be arranged. Again, no father, but this time his mother is named as Sarah.

Only transcripts are avaiable on FindMyPast - no original pages have been scanned.

Could anyone help, please?

Thank you in advance.

Hi Amanda,

As far as I can tell, the Rickinghall Inferior (RI) parish registers have not been digitised, so the images are not available online.

I thought I would have a look at this for you, to see whether a Mary or Sarah Driver seemed to fit better in this context.

Looking at the RI parish register transcriptions on FindMyPast, it appears that there was only one Driver family living there at the end of the 18th century: Robert Driver and his wife, Elizabeth, who married in 1769 in RI.

Robert and Elizabeth had several children, including:
Mary (1771)
Sarah (1773)

So, at this point, both of these women are possible mothers. However, in 1796, Mary marries Leonard Lummas, which removes her from the list of potential mothers for James.

I cannot find a marriage for Sarah, but there is a burial of a Sarah Driver in RI in 1833. Her estimated birth year is 1772, so it looks like Sarah may never have married or had children other than James.

Hi, Queenie

Thank you so much for taking the time to help; I really appreciate it! I think you're more than likely correct, I just wish I could confirm it. Hopefully one day I'll get to visit the archives!

Thank you again!
