James CHARLES Farnell
« on: Thursday 16 February 23 18:26 GMT (UK) »
Hi Everyone
I have attached here a tiny little notice from the Dundee Advertiser 6th of Jan 1880 for the death of my ancestor James CHARLES in Farnell, (Woodend).

I am now trying to find the whole page for this and in fact that specific newspaper just in case there is other stories relating to the area.

I still have not found who owned the property/land that James was working on/near.  Charity Muir seems to be a plantation and Woodend either a cottage OR a group of cottages.

I am assuming (hoping) from the snip on James death that there were more family in New Zealand.

I did email the Angus archives to find out who owned the land of Charity Muir between 1812 and 1879 when James and family were there but I did not receive an answer to that specific question.

I also "tried" to look on the NRS yesterday for anything relevant but found it a bit daunting, I may have to just email them I guess with specific questions.  Kindest regards Dianna

You are running a duplicate thread on the Scotland Genealogy list at groups.io.

I posted the following on that list on Wednesday 8 February

Charity Muir https://scotlandsplaces.gov.uk/digital-volumes/ordnance-survey-name-books/forfarshire-angus-os-name-books-1857-1861/forfar-angus-volume-41/12?display=transcription

On a map https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=15.0&lat=56.70473&lon=-2.63386&layers=5&b=1

You can see from the map that there were several cottages and a school at Woodend.

Recent photographs of the immediate area

This is part of Kinnaird Castle estate, the seat of the Earls of Southesk. https://kinnairdcastle.co.uk/ and it is likely that he was employed by Southesk Estates.

Angus Archives https://www.angus.gov.uk/angus_archives has some documents relating to Kinnaird Castle, but I do not know if these include employment records.

They also hold surviving Poor Relief records, but I do not know whether or not the Farnell ones have survived. If they have, he should be mentioned because he was described as a pauper, which specifically means that he was on the Register of Poor.

He may be listed in the Valuation Rolls at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

He might have been mentioned in the records of Farnell Kirk Session, also at Scotland's People

As you will see, I told you that Woodend and Charity Muir are part of the Kinnell Estate, the property of the Earl of Southesk. If you prefer not to believe me, please refer to the Valuation Rolls at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

Hi Forfarian
I was trying to get but to your reply on Feb 8 but could not locate it.  Sorry.  Now as for believing you of course I don't doubt what you said.  That comes off as a bit aggresive sorry to say.

Sorry I did not finish my post correctly.  I am shaking now because I am a bit upset with the response.  Grrrr!  The reason I put posts on different boards is that I hope different people see them and may have a particular interest in the area or people I am discussing.

Okay I don't think I will be posting here for a while.  Dianna

Proof that the Earl of Southesk was the owner of Woodend, Parish of Farnell.
