Houses in Owen Sound, Ontario
« on: Sunday 19 February 23 13:48 GMT (UK) »
I have a birth in 1910 at 567 13th Street West, Owen Sound, Ontario. (Family came over, son born, on census, return to England.)

The house looks modern.  It is part of a group of 8 terraced houses with garages at the front.  There are many numbers missing along the street - assuming evens on one side of road, and odds on the other.

Would a lot of replacement buildings have occurred here?

Apologies for my ignorance of Canadian urban renewal.

Hi,

The houses on the other side of the street appear to be much older.   If you swivel your "street view", you can see them.   Those look like early 20th c houses.

Yes, it would be even numbers on one side and odd on the other.

As for urban renewal here - happening everywhere!!

Yes, I agree about the other side of the street.

However, if the street was built on both sides at about the same time, the 'older' ones look in fair condition, so I wondered why they would replace them in that row.

I have seen lots of new ones in England, but usually replaced because of war damage or were slums.  Later on individual ones get updated, particularly if in a 'good' area. That road looks wide and well planned from the start.

In reality, lots of factors at play.

Are old planning applications easily available to search, or not?

Thanks.

The streets were renamed in 1909 using a standardized numbering system. Lots of good info and old maps here:

Hi,

Thanks for the links and information about the naming systems.
