David Johnson Date and what uniform is he wearing
« on: Sunday 19 February 23 23:18 GMT (UK) »
Hi I was recently sent this photograph by a 2nd cousin. The couple at the front are my great grandparents David Johnson born 1867 and Mary Jane nee Willerton born 1868. The girl back left Elizabeth was born 1899 and girl back right Eleanor born 1900. The girl front left Grace was born 1906 and Lillian born 1909. The gentleman in the middle wearing uniform was my Grandad born 1895. The family were from Northumberland. I wondered if someone could tell me what year this could have been taken and also what uniform my grandad was wearing. I was told he served in both the 1st and 2nd world war but was told he was in the army and the air force in the 2nd. However relatives said it looks like RAF uniform. Any help would be much appreciated

He's not wearing any medal ribbons  which means either this was taken prior to or during WW1, or if it was after WW1 then he didn't serve overseas (or at all) during the War. Based on the dress on the great grandparents I think this either pre-First World war or early in the war. I'm not sure Shaun is right about the Fusiliers. I think it's a Grenadier Guards capbadge. Both badges below for compariosn. The flames on the Grenadiers are not as tall as on the Fusiliers' capbadge.

If geordiesue's name is any indication of the family's origin, I would agree with Shaun.

Thank you Andy j2022, ShaunJ and Japeflakes for your replies. I wasn`t too sure if it looked like the Northumberland Fusiliers badge as it wasnt very clear. So if there are no ribbons or medals would the estimated date of the photo be about 1915/16?

The girls look to be about 10/11 and 7/8 years old.

Clothing suggests mid-1910s so it might well be before he went to the front.
