William Altree-Williams appearing from nowhere
« on: Monday 20 February 23 15:06 GMT (UK) »
On 1911 census
William Altree Williams B ABT 1875
tiler and mosaic *fixer at building works b.Birkenhead with his wife of 12 years Mary Jane nee SMITH
At 78 Warren rd Southport Birkenhead
With children

eldest daughter Selina ALTREE-WILLIAMS age 11
I found her baptism record  in 1900

But can't find them in 1901

Also can't find any earlier  record of him wonder if the altree - Williams surname could be composite of  mother and father's surnames

Many trees on Ancestry have his parents as being William Arthur Williams and Susanah Leicester but their son William was still single in 1901

Any help appreciated .

There seems to be a decent tree for this family on familysearch. Decended from a marriage in Wolverhampton in 1816 between Joseph Williams and Elizabeth Altree. Ray

1901 3485 /125/23

Charles W Alarce 25 yrs music Master b Birkenhead
Margaret J 21 yrs
Selina  1 yr

Should read Altree

In 1911, William’s wife is Margaret Jane
I think Charles could be Charles H - so not sure of the connection

If I am looking at the correct 1901 census, William’s wife was
Margaret Jane, age 31, born Liverpool, Dressmaker

Could this be the family (but her husband’s details don’t fit), found under surname Alarce (on Anc*try)

1901 South Everton, Lancashire
Charles W? Altree, head, age 25, born Birkenhead, Music M? for instruments etc.
Margaret J, wife, age 21, born Liverpool, Dressmaker, etc.
Selina, daughter, age 1, born Birkenhead

heywood types faster than do I.  ;D.  Sorry for duplicating info.

So it does look as if his middle name became start of a double barrelled surname
Sometime between 1901 and 1911

The geneat source is wrong * ( sorry  Cas that was a hasty judgement)
