I have relatives who moved from Wales to Co Durham to work in the mines. Some of them then moved to Pennsylvania.  I was born and grew up in Wales and now live in Newcastle so it seems highly probable to me  :)

His parents' ancestors may  have come from Wales originally.

I checked that initially but could not find an entry for either a baptism or a census record for a ?Benjamin Moriss  or similar. Also not found a similar to Gateside  in Wales.

Add - only Gateside that I could find was in Fife. The pronunciation of Gateshead  can often sound like Gateside.

Just in case you haven't come across the marriage in the newspapers.
