657 Edgefauld Road. Glasgow
« on: Monday 20 February 23 21:48 GMT (UK) »
Good evening
I have found a birth record in 1904 and its recorded as Barnhill Poorhouse, Glasgow.  There is a Register of Correction with the record and the address has been changed to 657 Edgefauld Road, Glasgow.  The correction is dated 1969.
The mother lived at 5 Water Street, Port Dundas, Glasgow and was a jute mill worker.   Are these addresses guises for the poorhouse?
I have had a quick search and can only find records for the asylum and people with mental health issues at Barnhill Poorhouse.

The relation that this record could connect to, the birth date is out by 2 days as per her death certificate record, 24th August instead of 22 August.  If its the correct person she was adopted by 1911.  Could this be the same person?

Thank you.

Was Barnhill Poorhouse a place where single mothers gave birth?
If it was did they also put babies out for adoption?  This would have been in 1904.

Poorhouses/Workhouses nationally were common places where  single mothers gave birth.

Legal adoption in Scotland was only introduced in 1930.  Private arrangements or by any of several charitable organisations was the way prior to 1930

Use Google - lots of info available

Yes, very likely.

Not in 1904/1911. There was no legal adoption process until 1930.

However the parochial board did place babies and children with foster parents. There would have been records of this child and how she was dealt with by the board. These records are in the care of  Glasgow City Archives but may not be available online. See https://www.glasgowlife.org.uk/media/2346/poor-law-leaflet.pdf
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Just as an addon It became standard practice in Scotland that Institution names were not used on Births or deaths and that the street address was used instead (regardless of it being poorhouse or hospital)
