John Harris of Sydling St Nicholas

Hello,

I'm looking for John Harris of Sydling St Nicholas.

He was born in 1861, parents James and Ann / Hannah Harris. He's on the 1861 census, aged 1 month, and also in the 1871 census, erroneously recorded as being 15 years old (which was the age of his brother, Thomas).

After that, I cannot find any more about him. There's no obvious deaths and he's not with the family in 1881 nor can I find any other obvious census entries.

He's not the John Harris born in Wool, Dorset around the same time.

Any assistance would be gratefully received - thank you.

I cannot find a birth registration for John Harris 1861 ?

His baptism was 2 March 1861 parents John and Ann

Mary Ann 1852 reg. Chard mothers maiden name Northam
Emily reg 1854 Dorchester (mmn Northam) bap 1 October 1854 at Sydling parents James and Hannah- her death registered 1855 age 0
Thomas 1856 reg. Dorchester  (mmn Northam) bap 19 October 1856 at Sydling parents James and Ann

Then John baptism only as above.

James married Hannah Gillett 1852 registered Chard.

She was the widow of William Gillard/Gillett who she married 1839 registered Chard- he died 1846 age 38.

Eli 1839 died 1840 age 0
William 1842 ( with the family 1871 census as James Harris stepson)
Thomas 1844 died 1844 age 0
Israel  1846 died 1846 age 0

I hadn't found Eli Gillett, so thank you. It's interesting to see that he was born in the same month that William and Hannah/Anna/Ann were married.

I believe Hannah and James had another child, William, who was born in Jan 1859 (Maiden Newton) and died in March of the same year (Dorchester).

Using the GRO Index

The William Harris who died March Quarter 1859 reg. Dorchester was 3 years old.

His mother's maiden name was Sheppard

I will have to try and find what happened to him, too... he's not in the 1861 census.

I'm looking on Ancestry and can see a baptism for William in Jan 1859, parents James and Anne, in Maiden Newton.

Why?

This is another family entirely, lived in Maiden Newton ref: 1851 census Chapel Street.

Other children baptized at Maiden Newton

Fanny 26 November 1848
Emma 26 November 1848
Anna 30 September 1851  (registered as Hannah)
Elizabeth  25 September 1853
*William reg. 1855 (December quarter) same child
*William bap 1 January 1859 before his death age 3

Using GRO index all these children have mothers maiden name of SHEPPARD
