Help with John Phillips of Quainton please
« on: Wednesday 22 February 23 14:19 GMT (UK) »
This family have been driving me crazy!!

I  have Mary Phillips b.1705 in Quainton, m.1728 to Jonas Rainbow.  I think her father is John Phillips

b.1690 West Wycombe,  I think Mary had older sisters Anne b.1702 and Elizabeth b.1702 maybe

twins? But that seems to make John Phillips too young?

I just cannot find who Mary's mother was - maybe Hannah?

Also I think Johns father was also John Phillips b.1678 Twywell, Northamptonshire who married a

widow named Hannah Grey on 26 Dec 1689 in West Wycombe.   Then I have his father as John

Phillips b.1657 in Great Marlow who married another Hannah!

Can anyone please help me sort this out as the names and dates are just swimming round in front of

my eyes and I can't sort them out!   :'( :-\.   Thank you.

Breaking this down:

I have Mary Phillips b.1705 in Quainton, m.1728 to Jonas Rainbow.

There is no Mary Philips baptised in 1705 in Quainton.

I think her father is John Phillips b.1690 West Wycombe,  I think Mary had older sisters Anne b.1702 and Elizabeth b.1702 maybe

Based on this, I imagine that this is the baptism you have currently assigned to Mary:
Mary, daughter of John & Elizabeth Phillips, baptised 28th May 1705 in West Wycombe.

West Wycombe is over 20 miles from Quainton, and Mary Phillips is a common name, so it is difficult to say with any confidence that this is the Mary who married Jonas.

For anyone helping, the marriage took place at Quainton on 6th October 1728.

...

Have you any proof of Mary Phillips year and place of birth  :-\.
There is another possibility  02 Mar 1696 in East Claydon with father John Phillips, East Claydon is around 5 miles away.  Probable mother for this Mary was Mary 'Phillips' who was buried in East Claydon 19 Dec 1698 wife of John Phillips

Hello Queenie and Rosie,

The information I have, has come from other peoples trees on Ancestry.  I know we can't always rely

on them being correct but there are so many of them that I assumed it was right.

I have  Mary b. 28 May 1705 Quainton,  m. Jonas 6 Oct 1728 Quainton, died 1771 Quainton.

Other trees have John Phillips and Hannah as her parents, but you've found the Mary from East

Claydon  who could be a possibility.  I'll have to research her!  Thank you for your help.  :-*

The trouble with these trees is that they are often without sources and people just copy them over without checking.  Then we think they are right because so many people have the same information so the errors get repeated.
