No ... I have FindMyPast but not Ancestry or FamilySearch.

I can access Ancestry at a local library, though, if needs be.

I think you should just need to change the link from www.ancestry.co.uk to www.ancestrylibraryedition.co.uk

It is indeed, Jon ... can you just clarify for me the nature of this document?

I am assuming that when somebody sought admission to the workhouse they were examined as to the circumstances that brought them there, and their need ... and that this is a transcript of that examination.

Is that correct?

Yes, you basically have it. But, generally, not everyone who was in the workhouse is in the exam books. I guess it depended on the circumstances, and how sure they were about their settlement.
I also have people in the Islington exam books, but who were not in the workhouse. One of them was requesting a midwife.
