Newcastle Daily Chronicle  15 May 1918 p5

Mr. end Mrs. 41. Amelia Seseef, Newcastle, here bees informed that their one, Pte. Pzneet. E, Degifal, L•inaler Itairtmeat. has been reportod mlenag ...

This is a pay site, with just enough information available free to encourage you to pay for better look.

If the DAGLISH at 41 Amelia is recorded as "son of" you might think tht he is not married.
Mr and Mrs Dalglish, 41 Amelia Street, Elswick, Newcastle, have been informed that their son, Private Ernest H Daglish, Leinster regiment, has been reported missing since March 21.

1911 Census - Margaret Daglish was at Glue Terrace Elswick with son Ernest Henry Daglish, age 14.
Newspaper reports put her at 41 Amelia Street in 1918 and 1926. I have also checked the 1921 Census.

The Red Cross prisoner record has mother "Mrs H Dalglish, 41 Amelia Street". I suspect it is a typo (shd be "M"?) and the record for soldier #15181 does not relate to Henrietta's son.

The 2nd prisoner record  reads -
DAGLISH E H
Pte R. E. 2nd Battn, Leinster, D Coy, 13 Plat, 15181, missing since 21 3 18 France.
Rep: Mrs Tate, 34 Bournemouth Terr, Buddle Road, NUT.

Working my way through all your responses. … thanks….

Comberton ,  if the 1921 census shows Henrietta as “married” then James senior is absent but not dead.
Her daughter Henrietta also seems to have an absent husband as she too is listed as “married”.

Thanks for that information as it partly answers my question on the 1918 WW1 death. That seems certain now to be James junior.  Just need to find a death date for senior.
Still going through other responses. !!

Thanks to all

Ernest Henry DAGLISH who died 1918 was the son of Henry DAGLISH and Margaret TAYLOR as has already been shown in previous posts.  Your James Ernest Jnr died in 1944 as shown by Comberton in post #3.

This may or may not be of interest for researchers but there are some Daglish WW1 photos on the Illustrated Chronicle site.

I'm pleased that the information helped with James junior.
I have been looking at a James Ernest Daglish who died in 1942 in Manchester.
Death registration on Familysearch gives age 75 and GRO says 73, occasional copy A, so born 1867-69ish.

This is his burial and it is a Catholic burial, confirmed on Manchester burials. He is buried in a grave with many others, none of them Daglish.

www.burialrecords.manchester.gov.uk/GenSearch.aspx

The 1939 Register has this man in Manchester who may be the above man.

James E Daglish born 24 Dec 1863, married, incapacitated and seems to be living in an institution. I know the year of birth is wrong but not uncommon, especially if he is living with strangers.

www.manchester.gov.uk/directory_record/212444/crumpsall_workhouse#:~:text=By%201930%20the%20Manchester%20Union,became%20known%20as%20Crumpsall%20Hospital.

I don't know if this is your James but as he wasn't with Henrietta on census records after 1891 maybe they parted. Hopefully someone can find further information to help determine if he is your man.

Hi Comberton,

Thank you for that. It does seem very possible.  I had been looking at prisons to see if he was a guest of her majesty (sorry his majesty), but nothing seemed to fit.  What you have discovered fits much better.  He was by occupation (in 1891 census) a Brass Founder (a risky kind of job). So “incapacitated” might be a reason for his absence, and the fact that his wife is not listed as widow.

I will use the details you have found for now and see if over time they are supported by any new information.

Thank you for your diligence.

Richard
