The Coombe & Ash Street
« on: Sunday 26 February 23 10:39 GMT (UK) »
I'm searching for any information on my grandfather Augustine's family the Clarke's who lived in Ash Street and The Coombe from 1898 to 1938, his father was called John and he was a street musician, mother was Catherine.
His brother Victor married Bridget Dodd who also lived in the same area. Any information would great, would love to know if there are any Clarke's or Dodds still in the area.

Was looking at it too heywood and I think it's Augustus (note the two 'u's are the same in the name).

Victor Clarke married Bridget Dodd on 25 March 1919.

I wonder if Frederick is Victor?

Newspaper snippet
May 1900 Dublin Daily Nation re an assault by John Clarke, 9 Ashe Street (think it should be Ash Street)

I haven’t found them in 1901 census either  ???

Thank you both, I have come to the same conclusion that Victor was given the name Frederick but they later changed it to Victor, he was baptised as Victor 5 days after he was born. I have already found them on the 1911 census but cant find them on the 1901 either, they could be in another part of Ireland but I've yet to find it. Their father (my great grandfather) was in and out of prison most of his life and I have found a number of newspaper articles about him but not seen the one you have mentioned, I can't see that you have put the link to it? If not can you tell me where you have found it so I can have a look. Thnaks.

28 July 1906 - John the musician was in the prisoners' book in Kingstown (Dun Laoghaire) charged with 'tendering a base half crown'. He was acquitted on 1st August 1906.

On 29 September 1913, he appears again in the register, listed as John Clarke or McCormack, musician, this time in the Bridewell station and charged with abandoning his children. He was cautioned on 1st October 1913.

DMP prisoners books: https://digital.ucd.ie/view/ucdlib:43945 and https://digital.ucd.ie/view/ucdlib:43947

Catherine and the children appear in the workhouse records quite a lot, sometimes when John would be in prison. Looks like the family didn't have it easy.

Find My Past have the Dublin workhouse records. The workhouse was for those in need, but also as a cheap hospital for the poor.
