Tracing Cassidy Family
« on: Monday 27 February 23 10:53 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I am new to the whole genealogy thing and wondering if someone can point me in the right direction of finding more information.

I have managed to find quite a lot of information already however I am trying to find more details on a great-grand uncle, such as marriage etc and unsure where to check. The details I have I will list below.

Great-granduncles name: John James Cassidy
Birth: 13th May 1867, Boveedy Kilrea.
Fathers name: Manus Cassidy
Mothers name: Jane McAlister

I know that Manus and Jane had one other son called William Cassidy (he is my great-grandfather), unsure of his exact date of birth but died on 28th Jan 1922 and is buried in Tamlaght church of Ireland with his wife Margaret Mullan and two of his daughters Violet and Emily. This family line is where I am connected to so I know most of this information already.

Unsure if there were any other brothers or sisters, as from the irishgenealogy.ie website I have only been able to find John James Cassidy and William Cassidy as mentioned above.

Also been unable to find information about Manus Cassidy's father who is listed as Francis Cassidy and have no other information.

Welcome to RootsChat!

Interestingly, someone else posted a question about this exact same family in 2022! They must be a cousin of yours:

A few good links to the various civil registration records, so worth checking out the thread.

Ancestry has what seems to be some sort of application form for an extract of a parish register, which has the following details:
Full name of applicant: William or William Gilmore Cassidy (Boveedy)
Address: Mr. William Cassidy, Upperlands, County Londonderry
Full names of father and mother of applicant: Manus & Jane
Parish church in which applicant was baptised: Tamlight O'Crilly
Year of baptism or birth: 1850-1852

So it looks like William applied for a copy of his baptism entry? Strange that there is such a large gap between William and John, but I cannot find any other children.

I also could not find anything on John James, but hopefully someone else will have some ideas as south-west Ireland is more my specialty.

Regarding Francis Cassidy, I notice that in the 1831 census of Tamlight O'Crilly there is both a Manus Cassidy and Frank Cassidy present. 3 people in Manus' household and 8 in Frank's. I imagine Frank could be Manus' father and perhaps Manus is Frank's brother or maybe even Frank's father?

I had come across the baptism entry which mentioned the Year of baptism or birth: 1850-1852
The part that becomes a little confusing is on the cenus forms for 1901, both William and his wife Margaret are aged 41 though it does mention that they can only read so its possible that something has gone wrong somewhere.

William and Margaret married in 1876, both 21 or over.  I suspect that Margaret was fibbing and was very young, probably born around 1860, and William was tweaking his age a bit on the census.  She was still having children in 1903.  He knew how old he was when he applied for a copy of the baptism in 1920.

The church registers are still in local custody.
